The feature tells Senoga's compelling story of working as a teacher in her native Uganda, of fleeing Uganda to escape an unwanted forced marriage, of being reunited with her daughters here in the U.S., and of taking several jobs to earn her degree at the University of Richmond.

Senoga graduated from the School of Continuing Studies in 2006 with a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree and remains engaged in the University as she works to earn a Master of Liberal Arts degree.

Her older daughter (pictured with Senoga) currently attends the University and resides on campus. As a sophomore who plans to double major in leadership and psychology, Senoga's daughter looks to her mother as a role model and inspiration.

In 2006, the School named a book award in Senoga's honor. The Joanita Senoga Bbaale Book Award in Recognition of Excellence by a Student Whose Native Language is not English goes to a the graduating senior with the highest grade point average whose native language is not English. Naturally, Senoga was the inaugural recipient of this award.
