Through a UR Summer Fellowship, a Career Path is Chosen

BJ Scott, ’13 developed a passion for entrepreneurship during his time at the University of Richmond. Being a sociology major helped Scott think outside the box and be creative when thinking about careers he wants to pursue in the future.  Last summer he put his creativity to use during an internship with Big River Advertising.

Through this internship, Scott got a better understanding of the field of advertising. He was drawn to the advertising industry because of his passion for creativity and put that to good use while at Big River. He also took the opportunity to learn from many different departments including design, development, research and public relations. These diverse experiences enabled Scott to gain a full perspective of the industry and the many directions he could pursue in the future.

Scott’s time at Big River was extremely valuable for him and confirmed that he has what it takes to succeed in the advertising industry. Additionally, the experience he gained helped him secure a paid internship last fall at Snagajob.com. Scott is not only thankful for his time at Big River but is also thankful for the UR Summer Fellowships that enabled him to accept the unpaid position.

“The UR Summer Fellowship made it possible to not have to worry about working a non career-related job or living at home, but gave me the opportunity to intern at a company where I learned so much,” said Scott. “The University of Richmond and Career Services allowed me to have that opportunity and I will be forever grateful for it.”

Scott’s biggest piece of advice for current students is to take advantage of all the resources the University has to offer.

“I learned you need to be proactive and take advantage of these resources in order to get the most out of your college experience.”

In the future Scott sees himself working as an interactive designer for a marketing/advertising firm and has hopes of running his own internet start-up.
