Retired nuclear agency executive finds learning opportunities at the Osher Institute

Meet George Pangburn, Osher Institute Member and chair of the Osher Leadership Council, 2014-2016.

Pangburn became an Osher member in 2010, shortly after he retired from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Pangburn worked for the NRC for nearly 30 years as an inspector, supervisor, manager and senior executive.

When he retired in 2009, he was serving as a senior executive with responsibility for all of NRC’s regulatory programs for the use of nuclear materials in the United States. He knew that in retirement he wanted to be involved in a wide range of learning activities, including formal classes as well as continued professional work, and Osher seemed to fit the bill.

Shortly after he and his wife, Pam, moved to Richmond, they met with the Osher staff at UR, and that meeting confirmed their commitment to Osher. They’ve been members ever since.

When asked why he enjoys being involved in the Osher Institute, Pangburn replied, “I enjoy the benefits of our close relationship with UR in general and SPCS in particular.”

Pangburn listed several Osher Institute characteristics that continue to keep him engaged: social interaction with the wide range of Osher students, commitment and quality of Osher instructors and classes, and the opportunity to work closely with the staff and the committed members of the Leadership Council to enhance an already great program.
