Exploring the University of Richmond Career & Internship Fair last fall, Dan Cosgrove had one thing on his mind: landing an internship for the following summer.

“I decided to start early in my search, because competition is increasing and you have to stay a step ahead of your potential competitors,” said Cosgrove, a rising junior majoring in business administration with a concentration in marketing and a minor in rhetoric and communications studies.

Cosgrove, who is originally from Ohio, was able to connect with representatives from Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, an organization he was familiar with from a friend who currently worked in the organization’s Cincinnati office.

“I got all the application information from them, applied and was interviewed over winter break,” said Cosgrove. “Before I went home, I went to the Career Development Center for help with my résumé and to complete a mock interview.”

The hard work paid off, and this summer, Cosgrove is interning as a financial representative in the company’s Cincinnati office.

“I’ve been so surprised by the level of responsibility I’ve been given as an intern,” said Cosgrove. “I’m able to help people create financial security for their families by taking them through an analysis of their individual situations and making recommendations. I’ve been trusted to help people meet their goals.”

Cosgrove hopes to continue his work with the company by building his clientele base and continuing the internship during the remainder of his time as a student at Richmond.

“After graduation, I hope to obtain a marketing position at a respected company and work hard to advance in a rewarding career within the marketing industry,” said Cosgrove. “This internship has really given me a look at what it takes to be successful in the business world.”
