UR supports Chesterfield County Public Schools leader succession planning with LEAD program

Dr. Dana Jackson, Dr. Kate Cassada, and Dr. Tom Shields, through the Center for Leadership in Education, worked over the summer with aspiring Chesterfield County Public Schools (CCPS) leaders through the Center’s LEAD I Institute to explore leadership studies and to examine their own conceptions of and practices in leadership.
Aspiring CCPS leaders meet five times over four months in the LEAD program. LEAD is a long-standing element of the Chesterfield Schools succession plan, and for the 40 participants who represent schools across CCPS, LEAD is an investment in them as these future leaders.
When asked what they hoped to gain from their LEAD experience, participants mentioned a variety of outcomes, including the following:
- Confidence in their leadership vision, goals and skills
- Networking with colleagues across the division
- Exploring leadership and career opportunities
- Modeling leadership for students
- Slowing down while learning and reflecting
- Learning how to have tough and meaningful conversations
- How to be a part of the growth and success of an important organization
