Fulbright Program sends UR students and faculty around the world

Three recent University of Richmond graduates received prestigious and competitive Fulbright Awards for 2015-16.

Dane Michael Harrison, a December 2014 graduate of University of Richmond, has received a Fulbright research grant for a journalism project focusing on music education in Slovenia.

Kimberlee Laney of Gorham, Maine, was awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant grant to teach English in Kazakhstan. Laney received a Bachelor of Arts in interdisciplinary studies with a concentration in education and development. She minored in women, gender and sexuality studies

Gwendolyn Setterberg of Edina, Minn., also received a Fulbright ETA grant to teach English in Argentina. Setterberg graduated summa cum laude earning a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in psychology and Latin American, Latino and Iberian studies and a minor in Luso-Brazilian studies.

The Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Program places recent college graduates and young professionals as English teaching assistants in primary schools, secondary schools or universities overseas – improving local students’ English language abilities and knowledge of the United States, while increasing the U.S. student's own language skills and knowledge of the host country.

University of Richmond is a top producer of Fulbright U.S. Scholars. Three Richmond faculty members were awarded Fulbright grants for 2014-15.

Elizabeth Baughan, associate professor of classics and archaeology, received a Fulbright Scholar grant to support her archaeological research in Turkey.

Peter Lurie, associate professor of English and film studies, was awarded a Fulbright Distinguished Chair in American Studies teaching fellowship at the University of Warsaw, Poland.

Judy Richardson, adjunct assistant professor of education in the School of Professional and Continuing Studies, received a Fulbright Scholar Grant to teach methods in teaching literacy at the South Eastern European University in Macedonia

The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program. Participants exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.
