Edwin Cameron, renowned gay rights, AIDS activist to speak at University of Richmond School of Law

Edwin Cameron, who serves as a justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa, will give a lecture at the University of Richmond School of Law titled “Queer and African: Constitutional Protection for LGBTI Persons in South Africa’s Constitution,” on April 19, 4 p.m. in the Law School’s Moot Court Room. LGBTI stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex. 

Cameron is known throughout the world for his commitment to human rights, and was the 2000 recipient of the Nelson Mandela Award for Human Rights. He is the author of “Witness to AIDS,” a book about his personal experience with the disease.

“We are incredibly honored to have this distinguished international leader in human rights here at Richmond Law,” said Dean Wendy Perdue. “He’s known both for his tireless activism and his immense professional contributions to the South African legal system, and his insights in these areas will be an enormous gift to our students and the community.”

The lecture is part of the law school’s Emanuel Emroch Lecture series. Cameron will be awarded with the law school’s Green Award for Professional Excellence during the event. This award honors Judge William Green, one of the three distinguished members of the original Law School faculty at Richmond College.
