'Candlelight Festival of Lessons and Carols' to be held Dec. 4

November 17, 2016

University of Richmond’s Office of the Chaplaincy, in partnership with the Department of Music, will hold the 43rd annual “Candlelight Festival of Lessons and Carols,” Dec. 4 in Cannon Memorial Chapel. Two services will be offered at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The university's Schola Cantorum and Women's Chorale will present new and familiar Christmas carols and anthems in the tradition of the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols that was first held at King's College Chapel in Cambridge, England, on Christmas Eve 1918. The services conclude with the lighting of candles by the congregation and the singing of “Silent Night.”

Prelude music will begin thirty minutes before each service and will feature the City Singers Youth Choirs. Now in their 20th season, the City Singers Youth Choirs consist of children from 2nd through 12th grades from across the greater Richmond area.
