Police accreditation assessment team invites public comment

March 27, 2018

A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA®) will arrive April 2 to examine all aspects of the University of Richmond Police Department’s policies and procedures, management, operations and support services.

“Accreditation is a highly-coveted recognition of public safety professional excellence,” said URPD Chief David McCoy. “We want to ensure the university community is receiving the best service possible from URPD. Maintaining compliance with the CALEA standards is one of the primary measures that we can do that.”

As part of the assessment, agency personnel and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session at 5 p.m. on April 3 in the Ukrop Auditorium, Robins School of Business.

Individuals who are not able to attend the public information session and would like to provide comments to the assessment team may do so by telephone, by calling (804) 662-3106 on April 3 between 1 and 3 p.m.

Telephone comments as well as appearances at the public information session are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA standards.

A copy of the standards is available at the University of Richmond Police Department. For information or to schedule a time to review the standards, you can contact Lt. Eric J. Beatty at (804) 289-8723 or ebeatty@richmond.edu

Persons wishing to offer written comments about the University of Richmond Police Department’s ability to meet the standards for accreditation are requested to write: Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc., 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320 Gainesville, Virginia, 20155.

URPD is the first private institution and is currently the longest running university law enforcement agency to be accredited by CALEA®. Agencies must reapply for accreditation every three years and submit annual reports attesting to continued compliance with accreditation standards.
