New Exhibition at UR Downtown Exposes Misconceptions about Homelessness

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — A new exhibition organized by Daily Planet Health Services will open at the University of Richmond Downtown on Friday, Sept. 6 in honor of the Richmond organization’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2019.

Photovoice: Addressing Stigma Against People Experiencing Homelessness is a collaboration between Daily Planet and University of Richmond. On display are photographs and journal entries written to the Richmond community by individuals who have experienced homelessness, but have life stories that go far beyond the circumstance.

A special RVA First Fridays celebration will be held on September 6, 5-7 p.m. There will be a gallery talk at 5:30 p.m.

“We’re pleased to offer this poignant and thought-provoking exhibition to the Richmond community,” said Maureen Neal, Chief Operating Officer of Advancement at Daily Planet Health Services. “We hope the images and captions can create a dialogue about the myths and misconceptions surrounding individuals who endure an episode of homelessness in their lifetime.”

Daily Planet Health Services is one of nine participant health centers across the country committed to PhotoVoice Learning Collaborative, a community research initiative sponsored by the National Health Care for the Homeless Council where participants document their lived experiences with homelessness through photographs and journal entries. The exhibition at UR Downtown is an extension of this initiative.

Photovoice: Addressing Stigma Against People Experiencing Homelessness will run through November 26.
