Ten UR Students Offered Competitive Gilman Scholarships

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — Ten University of Richmond students, the most at one time in UR’s history, were offered Gilman scholarships to support their study abroad experiences during the 2021-22 academic year. Gilman grants allow students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad.

The latest Gilman scholars, who are all juniors, include:  

  • Marco Barcenas-Consuelo, a cognitive science major from Round Lake Beach, Illinois, received support to study in Brazil.
  • Sandy Flores, a business administration major from Annandale, Virginia, received support to study in Spain.
  • Krystian Hajduczka, who is double majoring in journalism and leadership studies from Lawrence Township, New Jersey, received support to study in Denmark.
  • Hannah Hald, who is double majoring in political science and Chinese Studies from Powhatan, Virginia, who received support to study in the United Kingdom.
  • Glory Harmon, a business administration major from Douglasville, Georgia, received support to study in Spain.
  • Grace Morocho, who is double majoring in philosophy, politics, economics, and law and American Studies from Newark, New Jersey, received support to study in the Czech Republic.
  • Sammy Ortiz, a business administration major from Havertown, Pennsylvania, received support to study in Italy.
  • Lizeth Ramirez, who is double majoring in history and anthropology from Houston, received support to study in Brazil.
  • Sofia Ringvald, a leadership studies major from Wellington, Florida, received support to study in Spain.
  • Elmer Sobalbarro-Umana, a biology major from Trenton, New Jersey, who received support to study in Panama.

The students were offered Gilman awards; however, the COVID-19 pandemic impacted some of their study abroad opportunities.

Since the program started in 2001, 66 University of Richmond students have been offered Gilman scholarships.
