University of Richmond Chemistry Professor Julie Pollock Receives NIH Support for Research on Antibiotic Resistance

November 22, 2022

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — Julie Pollock, associate professor of chemistry at the University of Richmond, has received support from the National Institute of Health for research focusing on antibiotic resistance.

The NIH subaward will be completed with colleagues from High Point University. Pollock and fellow faculty from High Point will work in their labs with undergraduate students to study mechanisms of antibiotic adjuvants, a non-antibiotic drug that can be combined with an antibiotic to make it more effective.

"Antibiotic resistance is a major threat to human health,” Pollock said. “The development of new adjuvants is important to make antibiotics more effective.”

Pollock and her research team will investigate Stk1, a protein important to research focused on drug resistance. This funding will support a summer salary for Pollock and summer stipends for undergraduate research assistants, as well as travel funds for the students to present their summer experience results at a national or regional meeting.

Pollock has taught at UR since 2014 and has also received grant support for her research from the Jeffress Memorial Trust. She has mentored a Goldwater and Beckman Scholar.
