January 31, 2023

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — Two University of Richmond students were offered Gilman scholarships to support their study abroad experiences. Gilman grants allow students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad. More than 4,000 students applied for the nearly 1,500 awards.

Lizet Garcia, a junior from Stamford, Connecticut, received support to study abroad in India, South Africa, and Jordan. Garcia is double majoring in health studies and chemistry.

Maaz Rao, a sophomore from Dhahran, Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia, received support to study abroad in the United Kingdom. Rao has not declared a major.

“The Gilman Scholars program is a great opportunity for students to study or intern abroad without worrying about the financial burden that could be a barrier,” said Dana Kuchem, director of the Office of Scholars and Fellowships. “Study abroad experiences through this program focus on gaining skills critical to national security and economic competitiveness.”

Since the program started in 2001, 84 University of Richmond students have been offered Gilman scholarships.
