University of Richmond Journalism Professor Singeli Agnew Recognized for Emmy-Award Winning Documentary Film

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — Journalism professor Singeli Agnew was recently recognized for her work as a cinematographer on the documentary Kids Under Fire, which received an Emmy Award for “Outstanding War or Violent Conflict Coverage.”

Kids Under Fire, which aired as part of the Fault Lines series on Al Jazeera English, documents attacks on children during the war in Gaza, and the efforts of doctors appealing to U.S. and international policymakers to address the humanitarian crisis.

The documentary also won a Peabody Award and an Investigative Reporters and Editors Award this year.

“Singeli is an absolute master of visual journalism, and this latest Emmy is more confirmation of that fact,” said Shahan Mufti, chair of the Department of Journalism. “Singeli does the work with amazing care and sensitivity and that makes it all the more powerful.”

Singeli Agnew, who recently joined UR in July 2026, specializes in documentary filmmaking. Her work with Al Jazeera has also covered the U.S.-Mexico border, the civil war in South Sudan, and post-9/11 foreign policy in the United States. Recently, she directed Citizen Nation, a four-part episodic for PBS that grapples with democracy through the eyes of American teens. Among other accolades, she also helped launch The Weekly, The New York Times' first current affairs television series, which won five Emmy Awards.
