History of Japan

Tze Loo

Tze Loo, associate professor of history and international studies, researches the connection between Japan's colonial history and its modern state. She studies how Japan uses material culture, cultural heritage and religion to gain power.

Her book, Heritage Politics: Shuri Castle and Okinawa's Incopration in Modern Japan, 1879-2000, positions her to speak specifically on this topic in Okinawa and how Japan and the U.S. used the island's culture to push their political agendas.
