Internship an opportunity to work on issues of global sustainability

Jordan Grubbs, '13, has a keen interest in issues of global sustainability. So when an opportunity arose that would allow him to spend his summer interning with a nonprofit organization that works to find effective solutions to energy problems and climate change, he took it.

He is getting academic credit for his efforts.

“I looked up some information about the organization and really liked their goals and ideas,” says Grubbs, who is working with Citizens Climate Lobby. “I have always been interested in the importance of the government addressing climate change, and I really liked the way this group believes that it should be handled.”

After interviewing with the Richmond chapter leader and discussing the organization's goals, he knew he wanted to complete his required Jepson internship with the organization. His role includes setting up meetings with Congressional officials and working to organize a national meeting.

A dual major in leadership studies and philosophy, politics, economics and law (PPEL), he is considering a career in law. “My classes have helped me develop critical thinking, research and discussion skills,” he says. “And my knowledge of leadership also gives me a better idea of what the people around me are trying to accomplish.”

The most interesting part of working with the organization is seeing the amount of dedication the employees have to the group and the mission, he says.

He plans to stay involved with the organization even after his internship ends.

“To be a leadership studies major and part of the Jepson School means to be a person who will try to improve upon the world around you,” says Grubbs. “The world is constantly changing and it is our duty to make sure that the change is for the better.”
