Junior Rachel Ziemba discusses her experience taking a class called "Spanish in the Community."

Junior Rachel Ziemba is studying Biology and Latin American, Latino, and Iberian Studies. Ziemba recently published an article in the journal VA Engage entitled “Mi semestre con la experiencia inmigrante: Todos podríamos aprender un poco” which translates to “My semester with the immigrant experience: We all could learn a little.”

In the article, Ziemba discusses her experience taking a class called “Spanish in the Community.” Through this class, Ziemba volunteered with VA Interfaith Center for Public Policy where she learned about the misunderstood life of an undocumented immigrant. During her time working at the VA Interfaith Center, Ziemba helped organize the Sanctuary Network of Virginia which is a group of congregations that support immigrants who are fighting against threats of deportations.

Ziemba intends to attend medical school after graduating from UR and hopes to use her bilingual skills to provide advanced medical care to underserved communities.
