Leading Civil War historian to speak Nov. 4 as part of Marshall Center Lecture Series

Gary W. Gallagher, a leading historian of the American Civil War, will speak on campus Nov. 4, 4:30 p.m., in Jepson Hall 120 as part of the Marshall Center Lecture Series. The talk will be on command relationships during the Civil War.

Gallagher’s books include “The Union War,” “The Confederate War” and “Lee and His Generals in War and Memory.” The author or editor of more than 30 books, he has received numerous awards for his work, including the Laney Prize for best book on the Civil War, the Douglas Southall Freeman History Award for the best work in southern history and the Fletcher Pratt Award for best nonfiction book on the Civil War.

Gallagher is the John L. Nau III Professor in the History of the American Civil War at the University of Virginia. He was founder of the Association for the Preservation of Civil War Sites.
