Pulitzer Prize winner Sheryl WuDunn to speak Nov. 9 as part of the Jepson Leadership Forum

October 24, 2011

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and best-selling author Sheryl WuDunn will discuss “Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide” Nov. 9, 7:30 p.m., in the Modlin Center for the Arts.

WuDunn is the co-author of “Half the Sky,” the University of Richmond’s “One Book, One Campus” selection. The book outlines how empowering women can aid in the fight against global poverty and calls attention to major abuses of women worldwide such as sex trafficking and forced prostitution, gender violence and maternal mortality.

A graduate of Harvard Business School, WuDunn has spent much of her career covering economic, political and social issues, and bringing attention to the issues women face. She and her husband, Nicholas D. Kristof, won a Pulitzer Prize for their coverage of China for The New York Times.

She has co-authored three best-selling books with Kristof, including “Half the Sky.” The book earned them the Beacon Award from the White House Project, a nonprofit organization that seeks to advance women’s leadership in all communities and sectors.

She currently works as a senior managing director at a boutique investment banking firm in New York and is a lecturer at Yale University’s Jackson Institute for Global Affairs.

The program is produced by the Jepson School of Leadership Studies and co-sponsored by the University of Richmond’s “One Book, One Campus” program. A reception and book signing will follow. Tickets are free but required. Group tickets are available. Reservations can be made two weeks in advance by calling the Modlin Center box office at 804-289-8980.
