January 11, 2012

Dr. Patricia Strait, Human Resource Management program chair, will co-present papers with two School of Professional & Continuing Studies students at two international conferences later this year.

Strait will co-present research titled “Natural Disasters as a Magnet for Forced Labor: The United States and Japan Case Studies” with Elizabeth D. Allen, C‘12. Allen is earning a Master of Human Resource Management degree and conducted research with Strait in the Directed Research class.

Strait and Allen will offer a virtual presentation of their research to the International Global Studies Conference, which will be hosted by Moscow State University June 20-22 in Moscow.

Based on the result of two case studies—one of Hurricane Katrina, the other of the Japan Tsunami—Strait and Allen identify a set of specific factors that promote forced labor during times of natural disaster.

Strait will co-present research titled “A Exploration of Assimilation Drivers and Barriers among Latina Immigrants in the United States” with Katie M. Botha, C‘12. Botha is also earning a Master of Human Resources Management degree and also conducted research with Strait in the Directed Research class.

Strait and Botha will also offer a virtual presentation of their research to the International Conference of Diversity in Organizations, Communities and Nations, which will be hosted by the University of British Columbia June 11-13 in Vancouver.

Based on studying first-hand perspectives on assimilation among three generations of Latina immigrants in the United States, Strait and Botha identify key drivers and barriers to Latina assimilation in the United States along with the role Latina women play in the assimilation of others within their sphere of influence.
