VMFA awards fellowships to art professor, student

January 25, 2012

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts recently awarded fellowships to two University of Richmond artists: Jeremy Drummond, assistant professor of art, and Jon Henry, ’12, a studio art major and artist scholar from Washington, D.C.

Drummond was awarded an $8,000 professional fellowship in the mixed media category and Henry was awarded a $6,000 graduate fellowship in the sculpture category. Irena Stanisic, ’11, was the first Richmond student recipient of a VMFA fellowship last year.

Drummond, who is a working artist in Richmond as well as being a professor, plans on using the fellowship to fund a new project entitled “Grave Architecture.”

Henry, who sits on the VMFA’s College Advisory Board, hopes to attend graduate school in the fall to work toward his MFA in sculpture. He also works for the University Museums on campus.

The VMFA awarded 27 fellowships in 2012-13 to Virginia art students and professional artists for a total of $157,000. This year the VMFA received 755 applications, which marks the highest number of applicants in the program’s history.
