Dr. Rafael O. de Sá Awarded the Distinguished Chair in the Fulbright Science Without Borders Program

February 7, 2013
Rafael O. de Sá, Professor of Biology in the School of Arts and Sciences, has been awarded the Distinguished Chair in the Fulbright Science Without Borders program in Brazil.  This program supports collaborative research in all science fields, strengthens Brazilian graduate education through teaching, and contributes to broader and longer term U.S.-Brazil institutional linkages.

Dr. de Sá, a specialist in phylogenetics and biodiversity, will be involved in both teaching and research at the Universidade de São Paulo where he will contribute two courses on the environment and biodiversity with a strong emphasis on practical learning, critical thinking, and primary literature analysis.  He will lecture on amphibian diversity and conservation biology, and will conduct research linking genetic studies of neotropical frog communities, biodiversity analyses and the development of conservation policy.

Having taught at the University of Richmond since 1992, where he was named a Distinguished Educator, Dr. de Sá has also held a teaching/research position at the Smithsonian, was a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris, and was a visiting Program Director at the National Science Foundation.  He has conducted field research in at least 18 countries around the world.  In addition he has received a number of research grants and has published and lectured widely, often with undergraduate student co-authors.
