November 11, 2013

A team from University of Richmond’s Jepson School of Leadership Studies is advancing from the Southeast Regional Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl to the national competition. The southeast regional competition was held Nov. 9 at St. Petersburg College in Florida and included teams from 20 colleges and universities.

The team will travel to Jacksonville, Fla., to compete in the national competition on Feb. 27.

The Ethics Bowl competition tests reasoning in practical and professional ethics. Questions address a wide array of topics, including social and political affairs, personal relationships and business ethics.

The team includes seniors Patrick Murphy, a leadership studies major from Redding, Conn.; Shelly Holland, a leadership studies and philosophy, politics, economics and law (PPEL) double major from Anchorage, Ky.; Ryder Tobin, a leadership studies and political science double major from Rye, N.Y.; and Lindsay Hudson, a leadership studies and healthcare and society double major from Chester Springs, Pa.

Jepson School professors Jessica Flanigan, assistant professor of leadership studies and philosophy, politics, economics and law (PPEL), and Javier Hidalgo, assistant professor of leadership studies, are coaching the team.

“The team worked very hard on their cases this semester,” says Flanigan. “I am so proud of their dedication and teamwork.”

The Jepson School draws upon the liberal arts to advance the understanding of leadership and the challenges of ethical and effective engagement in society. The School encourages students to lead lives of consequence that connect intellectual pursuits with moral and competent leadership.
