TLP and M.Ed. graduate recognized for outstanding instruction

August 18, 2016

TLP and EDCI graduate Jessica Pittman, GC’14 and GC’15, Title I reading interventionist and first grade teacher holding a gifted endorsement, was recently awarded both New Teacher of the Year at Bowling Green Elementary School and Caroline County’s Novice Teacher of the Year.

Her work to integrate agricultural education into her classroom earned her a mini-grant from Agriculture in the Classroom. With her grant funds, Pittman purchased a self-contained aeroponic garden which requires no watering, weeding, or soil. Her students collected data on their garden, learned first-hand about the new way of gardening, and grew two types of lettuce in their aeroponic tower garden.

Pittman reports on the project, “My kids are loving it (as am I!), and I'm excited to see the final outcome. I'd love for the school/county to have multiple tower gardens next year."

Ag in the Classroom offers their $500 mini-grants twice a year; Fall and Spring semesters. The application is found online at www.agintheclass.org. More details about the award on Facebook.
