Cynthia Gaines, GC'18, sponsors Lynchburg historical marker for African-American school

May 9, 2018

Cynthia E. Gaines, GC'18, who earned her graduate degree in public history from the University of Richmond School of Professional & Continuing Studies, has sponsored a Lynchburg historical marker for the Megginson Rosenwald School.

The schoolhouse was built with funds from the local African-American community, Campbell County and the Julius Rosenwald Fund, and was created to provide education to rural African-American children.

Gaines’ grandfather, Wiley Gaines, bought school buses to transport students to Megginson and other local segregated schools. This connection between Gaines and her grandfather, prompted her to sponsor the historical marker.

The sponsorship was published in an article in The News & Advance. The marker will be unveiled in a ceremony sometime this summer.
