Biology professor Amy Treonis receives Fulbright Scholar award to teach, conduct research in Nepal

April 2, 2012

Amy Treonis, associate professor of biology at the University of Richmond, has received a Fulbright Scholar award to teach and conduct research for five months in Nepal.

Treonis will teach undergraduate environmental science, organize a one-day workshop on the study of nematodes and investigate how nematode communities respond to soil improvements in Nepalese agrosystems. She will also mentor young female scholars as they grow into the next generation of environmental scientists.

Her research will address lost soil fertility due to over-cultivation and erosion and sustainable agricultural practices in Nepal.

Treonis has taught at Richmond since 2005. She earned a Ph.D. in ecology at Colorado State University and a B.A. in biology at Dominican University.

The Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), under a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of State, administers the Fulbright Scholar Program for faculty and professionals. Each year, the program sends some 800 U.S. faculty and professionals to 150 countries to lecture, conduct research or participate in seminars.
