Annual International Film Series screens films from five continents

The University of Richmond will host the 27th annual International Film Series Sept. 4 through Nov. 15.

This year’s series is dedicated to the memory of Paul Porterfield whose vision and love of film helped launch the series in 1989. A leader in the Richmond film community, Porterfield died April 7, 2015.

The free series, which is open to the public, features celebrated and notable films from around the world in what is often their only public screening in the Richmond area.

Films include:

  • “Black Coal, Thin Ice,” Oct. 2 and 4
    (China, 2014, directed by Diao Yinan, 110 min., not rated)
  • “Güeros,” Oct. 16 and 18
    (Mexico, 2014, directed by Alonso Ruiz Palacios, 105 min., not rated)
  • “The Salt of the Earth,” Oct. 23 and 25
    (France/Brazil/Italy, 2014, directed by Wim Wenders and Juliano Ribeiro Salgado, 110 min., rated PG-13)
  • “The Great Beauty,” Nov. 6 and 8
    (Italy, 2013, directed by Paolo Sorrentino, 140 min., not rated)
  • “O mestre e o divino,” Nov. 13 and 15
    (Brazil, 2013, directed by Tiago Campos, 85 min., not rated)

Most screenings take place in the Robins School of Business, Queally Hall, Ukrop Auditorium, unless otherwise noted. The films are played in their original language with English subtitles. Friday screenings are at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday screenings at 7:30 p.m.
