University of Richmond computer science professor Jory Denny receives support for robotics research and promoting diversity

University of Richmond computer science professor Jory Denny will receive support from the Computing Research Association for Women for a robotics project that promotes diversity in computing research.

The CRA-W’s Collaborative Research Experiences for Undergraduates will fund Denny’s research project focusing on robotic motion planning, which he is working on with a female undergraduate student.

This research specifically seeks to develop advanced algorithms for planning robotic motions and is applicable to all types of robots, including everything from automated household vacuums, an item many people have in their homes, to the Mars rover, which is used for exploratory missions in space.

“Women are underrepresented in computer science,” says Denny, who has worked at UR for the past year. “It’s exciting to receive support for a project that I'm not only passionate about but also aligns with two key areas of focus for the University of Richmond—promoting diversity and promoting undergraduate research.”
