National Woman's Party Opens New Exhibition Exploring Impact of Women's Rights Movement at UR Downtown

A new exhibition organized by the National Woman’s Party is now on display at the University of Richmond Downtown. Richmond is the first stop for this traveling exhibition that explores the impact of the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment and the issues still confronting the women’s rights movement today.

Just in time for Women’s History Month, Standing Together: Women’s Ongoing Fight for Equality is an exhibition that uses compelling images, rarely displayed banners, political cartoons, and records from women’s rights organizations to explore the dramatic, complex story of a century of women’s pursuit for equality.

A special RVA First Fridays celebration will be held on March 1, 5-7 p.m. The event features a cappella groups from the University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University. The Saved by the Bells, Octaves, Ramifications, and Notochords will perform songs on women’s empowerment beginning at 5:30 p.m.

“We’re thrilled to be the first venue for the national tour of this exhibition and for this powerful history to be on view throughout Women’s History Month,” said Kim Dean-Anderson, associate director of community relationships and UR Downtown.

Throughout the exhibition, the National Woman’s Party with the Bonner Center for Civic Engagement will hold community conversations to inspire dialogue and increase civic engagement. 

“We hope visitors to the exhibition will consider the work that remains and better understand the power of their own civic voice,” said Susan Carter, National Woman’s Party President.

Standing Together: Women’s Ongoing Fight for Equality will run through April 26.
