Dr. Elizabeth Baughan, Assistant Professor of Classical Studies, has been named a Non-Residential Fellow of the Center for Hellenic Studies for the academic year 2010-2011. Dr. Baughan’s research project is “Couched in Death: Klinai and Identity in Anatolia and Beyond.” Klinai (couches) are significant as burial beds in the Archaic and Classical periods. Dr. Baughan will research and write book chapters contextualizing the archaeological evidence for funerary Klinai with discussions of literary and artistic sources relevant to questions of the origins, use and meanings. She is particularly focused on the klinai of the monumental tombs of Anatolia before and during the Persian period as expressions of cultural identity.

As a Non-Residential fellow, she will have access to Harvard University’s online resources, plus travel support to visit the Center, located in Washington, DC, to conduct research and to be a part of the scholarly community there.
