Information Systems, Emergency Management majors attend local risk symposium

November 7, 2011

Four students from the School of Professional & Continuing Studies—Information Systems majors Tad McGonigle and Dianne Seal, Emergency Services Management majors Amy Altman and Joseph Bartol—represented the School at the Intersection of Risk Educational Symposium on October 25, 2011.

The Intersection of Risk Educational Symposium was organized, in part, by Bennie Moore, C‘04, Business Continuity Director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond.

The Symposium was organized as a forum for networking and communication among public- and private-sector personnel working in preparedness-related fields—emergency management, financial and operational risk, risk management strategies including enterprise risk management trends, disaster recovery, coordination of emergency management of the public and private sectors, crises management, information security, physical security, and more.

SPCS students appreciated the opportunity to experience real-world applications of theories they are currently studying. McGonigle used the networking opportunity to engage “many new and interesting people” while noting the “[presentations] related to classes that I am taking this Fall as well as what I do for work.”

Seal identified the “Use of Energetic Materials by Terrorists and Criminal Elements” as a particularly interesting and meaningful session: “I know I would love to hear more about this and what you can do to protect yourself [along with] warning signs of someone [who] might be thinking about using these items as explosive devices.”
