In Common Program Features Ring Dance Discussion

In Common: A Collaboration between Boatwright Library and Common Ground, presents a lunchtime program on "The Challenge of Diversity in the Ring Dance Tradition” on Monday, April 2, 2012, 12 noon - 1 p.m., THC 331.

Dr. Chris Mowery, Visiting Lecturer of Sociology and Anthropology, will present findings related to Ring Dance that are part of a larger study of Westhampton College traditions found within the coordinate system of the University of Richmond. Ring Dance may be analyzed as a tradition that, with a stated purpose of creating class unity and "symbolizing [Westhampton women's] achievement as upperclasswomen," also promotes and perpetuates traditional constructions of gender, heteronormativity and class privilege. The presentation will consider how, or if, Ring Dance fits with the Richmond Promise's principles of inclusion and diversity.  A panel of Westhampton College students will respond to Dr. Mowery’s remarks, and time will be allowed for discussion.  This program is open to faculty, staff and students.

Box lunches will be provided, so registration is required.
