Professor Con Beausang, Department of Physics has been awarded a new grant of $513,000 over three years from the U.S. Department of Energy.  This grant will continue Dr. Beausang’s work on “Stewardship Science at the University of Richmond,” and will provide support for a post-doctoral associate and a graduate student researcher, as well as for travel costs and supplies. Richmond undergraduate students will also be part of this research team.

The goal of the project is to advance a basic and applied science research program to (1) extract key nuclear reaction cross-section and structure data for nuclear stewardship science; (2) develop the next generation of gamma-ray detector, the Gamma Ray Energy Tracking Array (GRETA); and (3) investigate the properties of superheavy nuclei.  For this work, the University of Richmond team will collaborate with scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the University of California-Berkeley, and Texas A&M University.  The data collected  are relevant to national security and energy needs, and the project is also contributing to the development of the new cohort of nuclear scientists.

Dr. Beausang has taught at the University of Richmond since 2004, and currently serves as the chair of the Department of Physics. He also holds the Robert E. and Lena F. Loving Chair in Physics.  His degrees are from the University College, Cork, Ireland and the State University of New York, Stony Brook. He is active in a number of scientific organizations and has published and lectured about his work in the U.S. and abroad.
