A new book co-edited by leadership studies scholar Joanne B. Ciulla and published this month by Oxford University Press features research by William Stanton, a 2009 graduate of the Jepson School and current student at the University of Richmond School of Law.

The second edition of Honest Work: A Business Ethics Reader includes a case study written by Stanton on the ethics of Internet titan Google. His article, “Dancing with the Dragon: Google Goes to China,” explores the company’s 2006 decision to comply with the Chinese government and censor content that citizens can access on the Internet when they use the search engine. The company and its dispute with China is back in the news this week after a decision to close its mainland Chinese-language portal and redirect users to its Hong Kong-based search page.

Stanton wrote the case study during his senior year under Ciulla’s supervision and with the help of a grant from the Davoud Donchien Foundation. The grant allowed him to conduct research on a contemporary business ethics issue.
