Dr. Andrew Schoeneman hired as program chair and professor of Nonprofit Studies

The School of Professional and Continuing Studies is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Andrew C. Schoeneman as assistant professor and program chair of Nonprofit Studies.

Schoeneman comes to the University of Richmond from Virginia Commonwealth University, where he served most recently as Implementation Fidelity Analyst for the Partnership for People with Disabilities Leadership for Empowerment and Abuse Prevention program.

Schoeneman earned his Ph.D. in Social Work from the School of Social Work at VCU, a Master of Social Work from the School of Social Work at VCU, and a Master of International and Intercultural Management from the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont. His undergraduate degree, a Bachelor of Arts in American Government, is from the University of Virginia.

Schoeneman’s practice and scholarship are in the areas of community engagement, structural injustice, and resource allocation within communities and organizations. He has a particular interest in the role of collaboration between civil society organizations and their constituencies, with attention to dynamics associated with professionalization, sources of expertise and authority, and the bridging of divides between professions, interpersonally, and especially between professionals and service users.

Schoeneman has several written works under review and in preparation. His peer-reviewed articles have appeared in such publications as the Journal of Spirituality and Social Work, the Journal for Social Action in Counseling and Psychology and the Journal of Poverty and Social Justice. He has given peer-reviewed presentations on collaboration, social work education, and social justice and human rights at various national and regional conferences. In addition, he has been invited to moderate panels on access to services outside the state and nonprofit leadership under disaster conditions, and has been invited to present on formative and process evaluation and working with low-income communities.

Schoeneman is a member of the Association of Community Organization and Social Administration (ACOSA), the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA), the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and the International Society of Third-Sector Research (ISTR). He was received awards from Virginia Commonwealth University, the VCU School of Social Work, the International Society of Third Sector Research and the Legal Services Corporation of Virginia.

Schoeneman takes on the position of chair vacated in the retirement of founding Nonprofit Studies program chair Dr. Stephanie Micas. He served as an adjunct assistant professor in the Nonprofit Studies program prior to being hired as chair.
