"I do think that people of faith would find resources in their traditions, their faith traditions, for solutions to the problems we would think of as civic or problems in the public realm...And I would sense that Augustine, because he was so carefully, often, reflecting on Christianity and the political cultures of his time, is a natural place to turn. It's very hard to find in the New Testament what you'll certainly find in the Old Testament, which are examples. So you look to the early church fathers. And with Augustine you have an individual who's dealing with an imposing empire but an empire that's faltering, deteriorating and disintegrating and looking to his faith for resources."
