International Film: Black Girl

January 30, 2017
Black Girl (Senegal/France, 1966) is the featured international film for the weekend of February 3-5. Diouana, a young Senegalese woman moves to France to work as a nanny for a wealthy couple. Her dreams of a new life are dashed upon arrival, when she is forced to work under oppressive conditions. Refusing to accept exploitation, Diouana is driven towards desperation. Sembène’s landmark film is a powerful indictment of the devastating legacies of colonialism.
