Next Generation Leadership Academy to feature Rep. Robert C. Scott in keynote address

June 15, 2017

On Monday, June 19, the University of Richmond Center for Leadership in Education will host the 11th annual closing event for the Next Generation Leadership Academy (NGLA). NGLA is comprised of aspiring school leaders from the four major metro-Richmond area school divisions of Chesterfield County, Hanover County, Henrico County, and the City of Richmond.

The keynote speaker for the event will be Congressman Robert C. Scott (VA-03), ranking member on the House of Representative’s Education and The Workforce Committee.

Congressman Scott will be giving a talk and responding to questions about the state of federal education policy. Specifically, Mr. Scott will highlight the General Accounting Office’s report, K-12 EDUCATION: Better Use of Information Could Help Agencies Identify Disparities and Address Racial Discrimination, which was issued one year ago.

The Commonwealth Institute of Virginia issued a similar report for Virginia in November, Increasingly Separate and Unequal in U.S. and Virginia Schools.

Following Congressman Scott’s address and Q&A session, a group of local researchers/advocates will give a presentation that examines the demographic changes in the metro-Richmond area and the relationship between housing and K-12 educational achievement and opportunity. The report will highlight the rising housing and education segregation in the region and will discuss possible solutions at the local and state level.
