International Film Series: Maliglutit

The International Film Series features Maliglutit, a 2016 film from Canada. Maliglutit is a unique revenge story (inspired by John Ford’s classic Western, The Searchers) in which an Inuk man and his band of maliglutit (followers) set out in the Arctic to find the marauders who ransacked his home and kidnapped his wife. Like Ford’s film, Maliglutit explores the repercussions of violence, questioning whether an-eye-for-an-eye is ever justifiable. Kanuk puts a twist on the Western genre: critiquing colonial ideologies and questioning whether justice is truly possible in an unjust world.
