'A different kind of airline' touches down in Richmond (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

Spirit Airlines Inc. knows that it’s a “different kind of airline,” said Mark Kopczak, the ultralow-cost carrier’s vice president, network planning.

And it wants passengers to understand that up front.

“Our model’s a little different, and sometimes that takes a little getting used to,” Kopczak said.

Spirit, which launched in Richmond last week with daily nonstop flights to Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, Fla., says it sees an opportunity to undercut existing carriers here with its “bare fare,” which gets passengers a seat, license to carry a small personal bag — no bigger than 18 inches by 14 inches by 8 inches — and nothing else.
