The Visible Scholar: Dr. Atiya Husain

January 11, 2019

Dr. Atiya Husain, Assistant Professor of Sociology, will speak on  "’Looking Muslim’ and the Black-White Racial Binary" on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 12 - 12:45 p.m. in the collaborative study area, 1st floor, Boatwright Library. Despite only one-third of Muslims in the U.S. being Arab, many people see “Arab” and “Muslim” as synonymous in today’s context of the war on terror. Roughly the same number of Muslims in the U.S. are black and white Americans. This talk will focus on the experiences of black and white Muslims to show how this group is positioned relative to US black-white racial logic, and what their experiences can tell us about race in the US more broadly.
