Library Minute: Digital Preservation in the University Libraries

February 19, 2020

Did you know that Boatwright Memorial Library engages in active digital preservation? Active digital preservation requires the ongoing management and maintenance of digital files. We work continually to provide access to digital content while preserving the integrity of the digital files so they will be accessible for years to come. Digital files are susceptible to damage and obsolescence due to a variety of factors. Without active digital preservation we run the risk of losing our digital content.

Digital collections that the library actively preserves currently include audio, video, image and text files. They range from University related documents, publications and history, to collections of national historical importance.

You may find the collections of oral histories of particular interest. One is a collection of interviews conducted between 1975 and 1988 documenting the rich history of Westhampton College.

As you know, Ryland Hall is currently undergoing a renovation. Ryland Hall was one of the first buildings built on campus and the location of the original library. We have digitized and preserved some of the original plans for Ryland Hall.

Take a few minutes and browse our digital collections.
