SPCS Faculty Update

The University of Richmond has named Dr. Andrew Schoeneman, SPCS assistant professor and chair of nonprofit studies, as a Distinguished Educator Award recipient for 2022.

Colloquy is the University’s annual event to mark the official beginning of the academic year. Faculty and staff are invited to this celebratory occasion marked by speakers, recognition of the Distinguished Educator Award recipients, Distinguished Scholarship Award recipients, introductions of new tenured and tenure-track faculty and installation of newly appointed endowed position holders.

Schoenman earned the Distinguished Educator Award for his stellar record of accomplishment as outlined by the SPCS Review Panel’s nomination letter to the Faculty Award Selection Review Committee. He joined SPCS in August 2016 when we was named assistant professor and chair of the Nonprofit Studies program. Since then, he’s engaged in administration, pedagogy, service to the School and University and scholarship in the nonprofit studies field.

Since his arrival, Schoeneman has transformed the Nonprofit Studies curriculum into an innovation, research-oriented program of study. This transformation has resulted, in part, in students publishing peer-reviewed articles, giving multiple peer-reviewed conference presentations, and receiving mentorship in a two-semester community-based research project.

His scholarship extends his classroom pedagogy. Recent peer-reviewed presentations Schoeneman has given at national conferences focus on pedagogy and graduate-level teaching. He’s also published a peer-reviewed case study that can be use in classes in a nonprofit studies program. The article explores an organization’s relationship to social and political pressures and highlights the need for change leadership in allocation of resources.

Finally, Schoeneman is recognized for ongoing service to the University, focusing squarely on the importance of faculty governance of the University. He’s served on the Faculty Finance and Budget Committee, Faculty Senate, Faculty Senate Executive Committee, and as chair of the Faculty Senate’s Committee on Committees.

Schoeneman received the Distinguished Educator Award during the Colloquy celebration held on August 17, 2022. He is the only SPCS faculty member to receive the award this year.
