Cultural transformation is focus of 2013-14 Jepson Leadership Forum

September 4, 2013

An award-winning playwright and a TV critic for The New Yorker are among speakers for the 2013–14 Jepson Leadership Forum titled “Culture Shock: The Art of Leading Society.” Programs will look at cultural leaders in music, television, theater and the arts and explore how culture shapes the global landscape.

Programs will include:

  • Music historian Peter Guralnick, Sept. 24, 7 p.m., Jepson Alumni Center. Guralnick will discuss how a record producer changed music, shaped culture and gave birth to rock ‘n’ roll.
  • Cultural critic Giles Gunn, Oct. 23, 7 p.m., Jepson Alumni Center. Gunn will discuss how culture shapes foreign policy, economics and our view of others.
  • TV critic Emily Nussbaum, Nov. 6, 7 p.m., Jepson Alumni Center. Nussbaum, TV critic for The New Yorker, will discuss the new Golden Age of Television and how shows like “The Wire” and “Breaking Bad” challenged culture.
  • Award-winning playwright and director Moises Kaufman, Feb. 24, 7:30 p.m., Modlin Center for the Arts, Camp Concert Hall. Kaufman will discuss the power of theater to foster dialogue on current events and social and political issues. He is the author of "The Laramie Project," a play about the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a young gay man.
  • Documentary photographer and multimedia storyteller Janet Jarman, March 26, 7 p.m., Jepson Alumni Center. Jarman will discuss her 16-year photojournalism project on immigration in the U.S. and how she uses photography to help society see social issues in a new light.

In conjunction with the series, there will be a performance by folk musician Abigail Washburn, April 11, 7 p.m., North Court, Perkinson Recital Hall.

Events are free and open to the public, but registration is required at http://jepson.richmond.edu/forum or by calling Shannon Best, community programs coordinator, at 804-287-6522. Registration opens three weeks prior to each event.
