Weinstein-Rosenthal Forum to feature talk Sept. 25 by Michael Sandel on moral limits of markets

One of the world’s leading authorities on morality and economics will discuss “What Money Can’t Buy: The Moral Limits of Markets” at the 2013 Weinstein-Rosenthal Forum at the University of Richmond Sept. 25.

Michael Sandel, the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor of Government at Harvard University, will speak at the Modlin Center for the Arts, Alice Jepson Theatre, at 7 p.m. The program is free and open to the public, and no reservations or tickets are required. A reception will follow.

Sandel will take on the question of whether there is something wrong with a world in which everything is for sale. He will discuss how to keep the market’s values from reaching into parts of our lives where they don’t belong and challenge the audience to think more broadly about the effects their choices have on society.

Sandel is author of a book on the same topic, which critics have called “a brilliant, indispensable book on the relationship between morality and economics” and “one of the most important exercises in public philosophy in many years.” His Harvard course, Justice, was the first course to be made freely available online and on television, and it has been viewed by millions of people around the world.

China Newsweek recently named Sandel the “most influential foreign figure of the year, and Foreign Policy magazine named him one of its Top 100 Global Thinkers and his book one of 2012’s “must read books.”
