Marshall Center Lecture Series opens with economist Nicola Tynan discussing F.A. Hayek's critique of socialism

A former U.S. ambassador to the Holy See and a former chancellor and provost at the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani, are among the speakers for the 2013–14 Marshall Center Lecture Series.

The series opens Oct. 4, 4:30 p.m., in Jepson Hall 120, with a talk by Nicola Tynan, associate professor of economics at Dickinson College.

During her talk, “Hayek, Smithers and Thatcher,” Tynan will discuss economist F. A. Hayek’s critique of socialism and the role his ideas played in 20th-century British politics.

  • John Agresto, former president of St. John’s College, former chancellor and provost at the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani, and acting chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities, discussing “Liberal Education in Non-liberal Countries: The Promise and Perils of Trying to Set Up a Liberal Arts University in Iraq,” Nov. 22, 4:30 p.m., Jepson Hall 120.
  • Mary Ann Glendon, Learned Hand Professor of Law at Harvard University, president of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences and former U.S. ambassador to the Holy See, discussing “Politics as a Vocation?” Feb. 28, 4:30 p.m., Carole Weinstein International Center Commons.
  • Fred Rosen, professor emeritus of the history of political thought and honorary senior research fellow at the Bentham Project, University College London, discussing “John Stuart Mill’s Journey to Socialism,” March 21, 4:30 p.m., Jepson Hall 120.
  • Chandran Kukathas, chair in political theory in the Department of Economics at The London School of Economics and Political Science, discussing “Property and the Modern State,” May 15, 4:30 p.m., Weinstein Hall, Brown-Alley Room.

The series is hosted by the John Marshall International Center for the Study of Statesmanship in the University of Richmond’s Jepson School of Leadership Studies.
