National Weather Service designates University of Richmond as a StormReady Supporter

November 1, 2013

The National Weather Service (NWS) has designated University of Richmond a StormReady Supporter.

The university achieved the designation by improving its ability to monitor weather conditions and receive NWS watches and warnings with the addition of more than 75 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather radios across campus. The NWS also recognized Richmond for its ability to alert students, faculty, staff and visitors to impending severe weather. Richmond’s recognition as a StormReady Supporter complements the actions already taken by the City of Richmond and Henrico County in achieving StormReady status.

StormReady is a nationwide program that uses a grassroots approach to help communities better prepare for severe weather through advanced planning, education and awareness. An entity that promotes the principles and guidelines of the StormReady program may be eligible to receive StormReady certification.

Brittany Taylor Schaal, director of emergency management, said “The StormReady application review committee commended Richmond on our robust application, which highlighted the institution’s dedication to making the campus a safe place for students, faculty, visitors and other personnel to work and reside.”
