Author and columnist Bethany McLean, will speak at the University of Richmond as a Robins Executive Speaker Series guest on Feb. 3, 6-7 p.m., in the Robins School of Business Queally Hall, Ukrop Auditorium. This event and following reception is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

McLean, a columnist for, contributing editor for Vanity Fair and CNBC contributor, is known for her work on the Enron scandal and 2008 financial crisis. Her lecture will explore the reasons business can go wrong, including human nature as a contributing factor.

One of many milestones in her 20+-year career, includes writing “Is Enron Overpriced?,” noted as one of the first skeptical articles on the former energy company. Following Enron’s bankruptcy, McLean went on to co-author “The Smartest Guys in the Room” with her Fortune magazine colleague Peter Elkind. The book inspired the Academy Award-nominated documentary “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room.” Her most recent book, “All the Devils Are Here,” written with Joe Nocera, a New York Times columnist, examines the 2008 financial crisis.

McLean graduated from Williams College in 1992 with a B.A. in math and English. After working as an investment-banking analyst at Goldman Sachs, she joined Fortune magazine.

Ahead of this event, a screening of the documentary “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room” will be shown in Ukrop Auditorium Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. The screening is also open to the public.
