Political culture specialist to speak at University of Richmond Feb. 12

The University of Richmond Department of History is hosting a lecture, "1796: The Unintentional Campaign (That Created American Politics)", by Jeffrey Pasley Feb. 12, 7:30 p.m., Weinstein Hall, Brown Alley Room. This event is free and open to the public.

Pasley, a history professor at the University of Missouri, is a specialist in American political culture between the American Revolution and the Civil War. His books include

“The First Presidential Contest: The Election of 1796 and the Beginnings of American Democracy,” “Beyond the Founders: New Approaches to the Political History of the Early American Republic” and “The ‘Tyranny of Printers’: Newspaper Politics in the Early American Republic.”

The Society of Cincinnati in the State of Virginia is sponsoring this lecture. The national organization was founded by 1783 by a group of Revolutionary officers, with George Washington as its first president.
