University of Richmond Law students to volunteer at former chief justice John Marshall's House as part of HandsOn Day

University of Richmond law students will volunteer for Preservation Virginia at Chief Justice John Marshall’s House as part of HandsOn Greater Richmond’s day of service on Oct. 17.

HandsOn Greater Richmond organizes HandsOn Day with the goal of improving the city. More than 1,000 volunteers will be deployed that day to more than 60 sites.

Fifteen UR law students will participate in “The Chief Justice’s Garden” project by weeding, planting perennials, painting benches and sprucing up the historic site that was home to John Marshall, nicknamed “Great Chief Justice” and best known for his role in creating the modern Supreme Court.

“I thought this project would be a perfect fit for the law school,” said Tara Louise Casey, director of Richmond School of Law’s Harry L. Carrico’s Center for Pro Bono Service. “Our first-year curricula is chock full of Marshall Court opinions, so visiting the home of the man behind such historic cases will be wonderful for students to contextualize their learning.”
